Ilizarov surgery is a specialized limb reconstruction technique used for the management of complex orthopedic conditions, including difficult fractures, bone loss, limb-length discrepancies, deformities, nonunion, malunion, and selected bone infections. The technique uses a circular external fixation system that can provide stable support while allowing gradual correction, bone lengthening, and reconstruction when appropriate.

Gradual Deformity Correction

Bone Lengthening and Reconstruction

Ilizarov techniques may also be used for selected patients requiring limb lengthening or reconstruction following significant bone loss. Controlled distraction can stimulate new bone formation while the limb is gradually lengthened.

In appropriate cases, complex reconstruction may address bone defects, limb shortening, and associated deformity as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Management of Nonunion, Malunion and Bone Loss

Selected cases involving infected nonunion or bone infection may require staged treatment, removal of infected or non-viable tissue, stabilization, and reconstruction. Circular fixation techniques can be incorporated into an individualized limb-reconstruction strategy when clinically appropriate.

Rehabilitation and Long-Term Follow-Up

Ilizarov treatment requires regular follow-up throughout the correction, lengthening, and bone-healing phases. Physiotherapy is an important part of treatment and may help maintain joint movement, muscle strength, flexibility, and functional mobility.
